Why have clothing made in Portugal?

Portugal has a textile industry that has worked for European fashion brands for decades, with a strong tradition in knitted fabrics: jersey, french terry and fleece, exactly what tees, hoodies and sweaters are made of. The workshops there are usually smaller than in Turkey or China. Small runs from 10 pieces, however, we make in our own workshop in Turkey.

The second argument is a sober one: Portugal is in the European Union. What is made there goes to your address or warehouse without a stop at customs, so there are no import formalities to upset your planning.

And there is a brand argument. 'Made in Portugal' or 'Made in EU' means something to part of your audience, especially if your brand tells a sustainability or quality story. In Portugal you make that claim true in the place where it counts: your care label.

What can you have made in Portugal?

Mainly premium series in knitted fabrics: heavy hoodies and crewnecks, tees in the better cotton qualities, joggers and sets. Products where the hand feel of the fabric and the neatness of the finishing make the difference. We confirm the minimum run in Portugal per product. For outerwear, complex branding or large runs, we usually recommend one of our other production countries.

If your collection runs on organic cotton, Portugal is our most logical choice. We request GOTS-certified lots per production run from the fabric supplier and the factory; we don't carry a certificate as our own quality mark. The same goes for audit reports such as BSCI: they are available per factory on request. Still need to choose a clothing manufacturer? Then ask every party for those papers, including us.

Is producing in Portugal more expensive than in Turkey?

Per piece, usually yes: Portuguese production is generally priced higher than Turkish. On the other hand, you stay within the EU.

If you run a larger volume where the price per piece weighs heavily, Turkey is usually better: strong cotton quality at a sharper price, with the same lead time of at least 5 to 6 weeks. We work out in your quote which of the two comes out better for you.

When do you choose Italy or China instead of Portugal?

If your project is about high-end finishing such as garment-dye and luxury finishes, Italy is the obvious choice, with a longer lead time. If you run large series with complex branding, such as all-over prints, multicolour embroidery and custom trims, China is often more logical, with sea freight and import formalities in the schedule.

Portugal sits exactly in between: European, neatly finished and not the cheapest option per piece. If you want to produce within the EU and be able to explain that too, that is a fair trade.

What brands ask us about production in Portugal

Can I have clothing made in Portugal from 10 pieces?

No. We make small runs from 10 pieces in our own workshop in Turkey, on a base model. Production in Portugal is on request, when it suits your product; we confirm the minimum per product.

Do I pay import duties on production in Portugal?

No. Portugal is a member of the European Union, so for delivery within the EU you pay no import duties, file no customs declaration and have no clearance costs. For production in our workshop in Turkey you don't pay import duties either: we pay them.

How long does production in Portugal take?

Allow at least 5 to 6 weeks for the sample and then at least 5 to 6 weeks for production, each time after payment, depending on the style, the run size and the branding. Your quote states the schedule that applies to your project.
